Listed below are ways Campus Life seeks to implement and assess leadership development using the SCM:

Clubs & Organizations

Club training provides officers of student clubs and organizations the opportunity to learn more about their leadership role within their organization.  This training covers club officer responsibilities, event programming, organization management, club finances and procedures, EngageD, and campus resources.

Emerging Leaders Retreat

The Emerging Leaders Retreat (ELR) is an annual event held just before classes start in January, inviting first-year and sophomore students through a nomination and application process. Participants, both students and mentors, focus on expanding their on-campus social network, understanding the Social Change Model of Leadership Development (SCM) and its seven C’s values, recognizing their strengths through the CliftonStrengths Assessment, and applying these skills in academic, extracurricular, and real-world settings. The retreat involves presentations, debriefing sessions, and small group discussions to examine the interconnectedness of leadership values. Students engage in a campus project to apply concepts learned and address an identified issue of their choice by the end of the retreat. Mentors also play a crucial role in guiding discussions, debriefing sessions, and interactive activities while honing their own facilitation and public speaking skills.

Leadership Recognition Ceremony

The Office of Campus Life sponsors the Leadership Recognition Ceremony each spring to recognize students, organizations, staff, and faculty members for various leadership achievements. Nominations for the Leadership Recognition Ceremony are typically available before spring break. You may nominate an individual, group, or program by completing the Leadership Recognition Ceremony Nominations form on the EngageD page, accessible here with your Dickinson login.

LeaderShape Institute

The LeaderShape Institute at Dickinson is a 4-day program that helps individuals identify their values and create a vision for change in their communities.  

As an organization, LeaderShape, Inc. aims to transform the world by fostering leadership with integrity and a bold mindset. Their programs cater to college students and professionals, emphasizing the use of life experiences to nurture leadership growth. Regardless of the target audience, be it first-generation students or C-suite executives, LeaderShape seeks partnerships to deliver their programs.

The organization defines leadership as the practice of collaboratively shaping a just, caring, and thriving world through living authentically with integrity. Their programs draw on the latest thinking and research in professional, personal, and leadership development.  Participants in LeaderShape's leadership development programs focus on enhancing self-efficacy, embracing integrity as a core leadership value, and honing their ability to contribute to creating equitable and compassionate communities.

Leadership Workshop Series

Campus Life works with campus partners to host a six-part leadership series each semester. The workshops cover the following topics: Defining Leadership and Your Personal Philosophy, Gallup’s StrengthsFinder™, Effective Communication, Goal Setting, Conflict Resolution, and Inclusive Leadership and Teamwork. 

Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) –

The Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) is an international research project using the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale and other measures to understand college student leadership development better and assess the values of the Social Change Model for Leadership Development. Dr. John Dugan from Loyola University, Chicago, serves as the Private Investigator, and Dr. Susan Komives from the University of Maryland and Dr. Julie Owen from George Mason University serve as the Co-PIs for the research project. MSL is a partnership between the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs, Adele H. Stamp Student Union (University of Maryland), Survey Sciences Group, and the Center for Student Studies.

Omicron Delta Kappa (O∆K)

O∆K is a national leadership honor society.  The Dickinson Circle was established on May 17, 1927.  The unique mission of O∆K is to recognize and encourage collaboration among collegiate leaders. The Society seeks to identify, celebrate, and engage collegiate and community leaders from different backgrounds, perspectives, and generations. Members enjoy scholarship opportunities, leadership development programs, and national network access.

Socially Responsible Leadership Scale

The Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS) is an instrument based on the Social Change Model of leadership development. It identifies and measures leadership capacities for research, assessment, and education.  SRLS online—a Web-based version of SRLS—helps individuals, groups, and large institutions recognize their strengths and use them for the greater good.  SRLS online is a partnership of the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs, Adele H. Stamp Student Union (University of Maryland), Survey Sciences Group, and the Center for Student Studies.
