Noah Edward Radcliffe DavisThis short-term study abroad program was part of Italian 201, a globally integrated course offered on campus in Fall 2017. Students traveled to Italy in January 2018 for about two weeks. The program emphasized experiential place-based learning: the group visited several markets, learned about trash collection and recycling, and experienced regional food systems. Italian gastronomic heritage was also investigated: from Renaissance food in a historical Ducal Palace, to sustainable wine production in Tuscany, from a honey tasting to a workshop on imported produce and spices. The program was based in Bologna, but it also moved by train to the cities of Mantua, Venice, Florence, and Rome.
