How has Dickinson prepared Amanda for Life Beyond the Limestone? “My professors at Dickinson have shaped me into a confident writer, an independent learner and a critical thinker,” Amanda explains. “Some people say that getting a science degree from a liberal arts college is a disadvantage, but after my Dickinson experience, I would strongly disagree. At Dickinson I have learned skills applicable both to my work in chemistry and to life in general. I have learned how to think from other points of view, how to understand methodologies of other disciplines, and how to communicate ideas to those outside my field. The guidance and encouragement of my professors is what inspired me to attend graduate school.”

As a member of Run With It, I have leaved to think on my feet, negotiate awkward situations with ease and tailor my humor to my audience. As a student in the Mediterranean Migration Mosaic, I have learned how to relate theory with empirical research, how to navigate social spaces as a foreigner and conversely, how to interact with people who feel like foreigners.”

What are some of the defining moments of Savanna’s Dickinson experience? “I found a home at Dickinson, one that has taken me in, molded me and has left a mark on me forever,” she says. “From building tables in the Rector workshop, to standing at the base of Neptune’s fountain in Bologna, Italy, with some of my best friends while studying abroad, to sitting in my French class sophomore year and seeing the connections between my once disparate courses. That is what Dickinson is about.”

What is Laura most anticipating about her post-graduation plans? “In pursuing my M.S. in applied psychology at USC, I think this program will prepare me heavily for a job, fine-tuning the skills I have already received from Dickinson,” she explains. “I hope to work for an NGO or doing market research for a company, and I am especially interested in working internationally, as Dickinson piqued my interest in the global environment. I am excited and nervous to move across the country to L.A., to start over and make new friends. I am certain I will be able to do this, as I have done a few times over, at Dickinson and while abroad.”

What are some of the defining moments of Katie’s Dickinson experience? “Some of the defining moments have come from the community service opportunities I've had through my service-learning classes and my involvement in Alpha Phi Omega,” Katie explains. “In my Spanish for health professions class, I got a first-hand experience of interacting with migrant farmworkers, when we translated for them while providing healthcare information and discussing their lives.

“In my seminar in community psychology class, we worked with students from the River Rock Academy to create art projects that contain positive imagery about their lives. It was so rewarding to see how their confidence grew and how proud they were of themselves when they came to campus to have an art show and to speak to Dickinson students about their processes and final works. They were so excited to have students take an interest in their ideas and in their lives by asking questions and showing support.”

How has Dickinson prepared Matt for Life Beyond the Limestone? “The opportunities in the classroom were fantastic, but what really defined my Dickinson experience were the leadership opportunities,” Matt says. “One of the things I think Dickinson does incredibly well is developing student leaders and the opportunities I had (with MOB and ResLife) made me a better student, employee and leader. They definitely lead me to my master’s program.”

What is Matthew most anticipating about his/her post-graduation plans? “While I am excited to attend a different type of school at UCONN, I’m anticipating taking what I learn from that experience and applying it back to a small liberal arts college, because Dickinson has shown me how important the liberal arts are for students of any major,” he explains. “I wouldn’t be where I am if I had gotten a different experience. In the program itself, I’m excited to work with incredible staff and faculty through a number of hands-on-opportunities which will develop me into a better student affairs practitioner.”

Furthermore, my experience researching in the laboratory of Associate Professor of Biology Charles Zwemer has been invaluable in teaching me how to conduct research using human subjects, something I hope to continue in a career as a physician.”

What are some of the defining moments of Cole’s Dickinson experience? “One of the defining parts of my Dickinson experience was being a part of the Cross Country team and the Track and Field team for all four years at Dickinson,” Cole says. “Being a member of the team not only provided me with the opportunity to challenge myself to become a better runner, but also to build a number of incredible friendships that I look forward to continuing well beyond my time at Dickinson.”

Though it was incredibly difficult, it helped solidify that working with and supporting resilience in communities is what I would like to pursue.”
