Love Your Body Week highlights healthy body-image awareness

Love Your Body Week (LYBW) 2014 kicked off at Dickinson Wednesday night with the Love Your Body Soiree in the Social Hall and featured performances by the Syrens, Dickinson’s all-female a capella group, and Anwar, Dickinson’s belly dance club.

Focusing on healthy ways of embracing and caring for our bodies, Dickinson’s LYBW seeks to engage our community broadly on issues of body positivity.

“In our culture, women, and increasingly men, constantly are bombarded with the idea that our bodies are ugly and embarrassing and need to be modified,” says Amy Farrell, professor of American studies and women’s & gender studies.

The series of events provides a forum of support, information and sanity to counteract such bombardment, running from March 1 through March 5 with the following schedule:

March 1: The Hair Journals, which will feature hair appointments and conversation on the politics of race and hair. Landis House, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (e-mail ODI@dickinson.edu for information and appointments)

March 2: Move Your Body Day:

  • Zumba party, Kline Center basketball court, 2:30 p.m.
  • Bachata/salsa lesson, HUB dance studio, 5:30 p.m.
  • Synergy dance class, Allison Hall Community Room, 7 p.m.

March 3: “Let’s Eat” Dinner, where dinner and conversation are on the menu, featuring a presentation by noted body-image author Nicole Johns (RSVP at dickinsonLYBW@gmail.com)

March 4: Eating disorder screenings. HUB, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Kline Center, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

March 5: Eat, Sleep, Love, where you’ll learn new ways to nurture yourself holistically. Althouse 201, 7 to 8 p.m. (RSVP at StudentWellness@dickinson.edu)
