John Dickinson Scholar Rachel Kruchten '16 knew she wanted to attend Dickinson as soon as she visited the campus, and she says that Dickinson has not disappointed. She discusses who she would most like to dine with, what "jackpot" day in the caf means to her and the most fascinating class she's had so far.

Major:

Psychology.

Clubs and organizations:

PALS (treasurer), Spanish Club, Alpha Lambda Delta, Romance Language House, Waidner-Spahr Library (digital-services assistant).

Favorite place on campus:

Old West at Christmastime.

If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be . . .

Morgan Freeman or Mads Mikkelsen, although the second one might be better for a coffee.

Favorite class:

Sociology of Sexualities with [Assistant Professor of Sociology Amy] Steinbugler, because it was discussion-based and thought-provoking. I found myself thinking more critically about issues like prostitution and the stratification of sexualities in our society. I also loved how all of us grew together, as a class. We were all both more knowledgeable and more open-minded about issues that don't affect most people daily.

Favorite Dining Hall food:

The KOVE “jackpot day,” as I call it: matzo-ball soup, knishes and cold-cut sandwiches on rye. The best.

As a kid, I wanted to be . . .

. . . a hairdresser.

My biggest influence:

My older brother. He has taught me about independence, respect, relationships, succeeding despite adversity, caring for others, appreciating life and seizing opportunities when you get the chance. He is my role model.

Why I chose Dickinson:

I knew Dickinson was the place I wanted to spend my four years as soon as I stepped foot on campus. In fact, I was entranced by the unique architecture even before I got out of the car. When we went on a campus tour, I found myself impressed by the core values of the college, including personal responsibility, challenging yourself and global education. When the final decision had to be made, Dickinson made it for me by providing the best overall financial package. I was very grateful.
