Eyes on the Ball

Basketball camps are big summer draw

The campus in summer is not the bustling hub that it is during the academic year, but there’s still plenty afoot. While students, professors and staff members gear up for the next academic year, the campus is abuzz with a series of enriching summer programs, symposiums and athletics camps for children and youth. This week marked the launch of the first of four boys’ basketball camps, beginning  with a weeklong session for boys in grades 3-9 and ending with an elite program for star high-school basketball players with an eye on the Red Devil men’s basketball team.

According to Men’s Basketball Coach Alan Seretti, more than 200 elementary, middle-school and high-school players signed up for men's basketball camps this summer to brush up their technical skills and their team-play abilities. Along the way, they gain an insider’s view of life on a college campus, since many stay overnight in on-campus housing, and all eat in the dining hall and use campus facilities. They also get a chance to meet with fellow student-athletes from across the country and to work with some of the area’s best coaches and college players.

“Many campers attend our games during the season because of the interaction they have with our players during the summer,” adds Seretti, who recruits some of his best players as assistant summer coaches. “Some of them consider attending Dickinson because of the positive experiences they have here.”
