Call for Proposals

Central Pennsylvania Native American and Indigenous Studies Symposium

April 19 & 20, 2024 | Dickinson College | Carlisle, PA

The Center for the Futures of Native Peoples at Dickinson College is thrilled to unveil our first-ever Central Pennsylvania Native and Indigenous Studies Symposium. This landmark annual event promises to be a vibrant hub for Indigenous community members, scholars in Native American and Indigenous studies, artists, students, and the wider community. It's also a celebration of the new and growing Central Pennsylvania Native American and Indigenous Studies Consortium, uniting Dickinson College, Gettysburg College, Millersville University, Shippensburg University,  and Messiah University, with many other educational institutions involved and looking forward to participating.

This Symposium isn't just another academic conference. It's a dynamic blend of traditional and innovative elements, featuring not only keynotes and panels but also professional development seminars, musical performances, and engaging cultural workshops that promise to enlighten and inspire.

We extend a warm invitation for submissions from everyone keen to contribute, whether from academic backgrounds or not. We're looking for a diverse range of formats: panels, posters, performances, artistic displays, and insightful presentations. Topics are broad and inclusive, ranging from the Indigenous northeast and Mid-Atlantic, to the impactful legacy of Indian boarding schools, Tribal Law and Policy, Indigenous expressive arts, the emerging realm of Indigenous Futurism, and much more, including multiracial community-building, two-spirit experiences, and Indigenous feminisms. We encourage undergraduate and graduate student submissions as well!

To be part of this groundbreaking symposium, please submit your proposal via email to CFNP@dickinson.edu. Mark your calendars - review of submissions begins March 15th! Please submit a 150-word abstract or proposal for your ideas.

The Center for the Futures of Native Peoples at Dickinson College is a pioneering initiative. It's committed to enriching understanding and respect for Native American histories and cultures, spotlighting the significance of North American indigeneity, and stimulating a meaningful national dialogue about the diverse experiences of Native Peoples.

Situated on the unceded territories of the Susquehannock people, and with historic ties to the Lenape and Shawnee communities, The Center for the Futures of Native Peoples and Dickinson College seek to reinforce these connections and responsibilities to these lands and their peoples. Join us in this journey of knowledge, celebration, and respect at the Central Pennsylvania Native and Indigenous Studies Symposium!
