Basic instructions

The MediaLink controller on front of the podium can be used to turn the projector on and off, select input sources, control the DVD/VCR unit, and set volume You can also temporarily blank the image with the "pic mute" button and the sound with the "audio mute" button. Please note that in the event buttons are pressed with the projector off or the DVD/VCR mode is changed not using the MediaLink, the controller may "get out of sync" with the actual conditions. In most cases it is only necessary to press the appropriate button again on the MediaLink (even if it is already illuminated) to restore function.

Please be sure to press the "off" button on the mediaLink when done to conserve energy and lamp life. Do not leave it in picture mute when leaving.

About the Smart Podium

This unit allows you to draw over the computer image using the attached pen.  If not using these features, the button at the top of the unit with an arrow symbol should be lit for normal mouse function. If it is not, press that button to enable it.

To turn the projector On or OFF

Use the projector ON and OFF buttons on the MediaLink. The projector takes 30 seconds to warm up (The button will flash while the projector is warming up or cooling down. Please do not press other buttons during this time).

To view the built-in PC

If the computer image is not showing on the smart podium, check that its power button is on and that the Dell computer in the rack is powered on with its power button. With the projector on, press the PC button on the MediaLink. Note that the volume is controlled both by the PC volume setting and the volume on the MediaLink.

Dual monitor setup

A second Dell monitor is now installed for extended desktop on the PC. This monitor does not project but can be used for preview, You can drag windows over to this monitor to avoid showing them to the class. Please note that PowerPoint defaults to the secondary monitor when starting a slide show so you may need to change the setting for your login to get it to display the show on the smart podium and projector. Under the "slide show" menu, select "primary monitor" from the "monitor" pull down menu (if already in slide show you will need to escape out of the show first). You may also check the "use presenter view" box if you wish to use this feature (These settings should remain for your login in the future).

To view a laptop

If your computer has a HDMI port: plug in the HDMI cable on top of the podium and press the "HDMI" button on the media controller. In most cases it should not be necessary to connect the "mini" sound cable, the sound should work via the HDMI connection.

Otherwise: connect the VGA cable located on top of the podium to the laptop VGA jack. If using sound, connect the "mini" sound plug provided to the laptop headphone jack. With the projector ON, press the LAPTOP button on the MediaLink.You may need to press a function key on your laptop to enable the external monitor function (may be marked "LCD/CRT" or with a monitor icon).

To Play & View a DVD, Videotape, or CD

With the projector on, press the DVD or VCR button on the Media Link. Insert your CD, DVD, or video tape into the appropriate drawer or slot. Use the controls on the right side of the MediaLink (or the JVC remote) to control playback functions. If a cable TV channel is showing, press the TV/VCR button on the MediaLink to eliminate it. You must use the MediaLink to change between DVD and VCR functions, the buttons on the remote will not work as expected. The other functions on the remote work as described in the DVD/VCR manual..

To View Campus Cable TV

With the projector on, press the VCR button on the MediaLink. Then press the either the TV/VCR button on the MediaLink or the AUX button on the JVC remote (you may need to do this several times to get to TV mode). You can change channels by using the channel ("CH") up and down buttons or by using the keypad on the JVC remote to enter the channel number.

To View the Document Camera (Visual Presenter)

With the projector on, press the "Doc Cam" button on the MediaLink.  This unit may also be used as a camera for Skype or similar applications. You will need to sign out a USB microphone from the Media Center to pick up sound.

To control sound volume

Use the Volume control on the MediaLink.

System reset procedure

In the event the system does not appear to be functioning properly and help from LIS is not readily available, try the following. Shut down the computer (it is not necessary to shut down the projector). Once it has shut down, locate the plug connecting the power to the podium and unplug it. Wait at least 10 seconds and plug the power back in. then start the computer again and the problem should be cleared. Please let us know if you have needed to do this.
