Pre-Health Applying to Professional School

First Year – Making Dickinson Yours

Fall Semester

  • Attend mandatory Pre-Health Program Information Session at the start of the fall semester
  • Complete mandatory Pre-Health Program First Year Advising Sessions to  investigate the Pre-Health Program
  • Meet with the Center for Advising, Internships & Lifelong Career Development Pre-Health Professions Advisor to discuss career options as well as summer experiential options including research, volunteering, healthcare jobs, etc.
  • Learn how to balance academic life with residential life and selectively choose campus involvement relevant to relevant or interests that are important to you
  • Join and participate in Pre-Health Society meetings to meet alumni and speakers as well as to learn about various procedures or tools and careers. We may host discussion dinners or other fundraising events for our philanthropy too. If you are interested in allied health careers, dentistry or veterinary medicine, you are welcome to join one or more of the Career Interest Groups including Allied Health (for Physician Assistant, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, etc.), the VET Group for pre-vet students or the DDS Group for pre-dental students
  • Successfully complete first-semester required pre-health coursework and other degree requirements
  • Complete your on-line Waiver Form through the Gateway system if you choose to enter the Pre-Health Program
  • Request course evaluations from first semester faculty members at end of semester

Spring Semester

  • You will receive instructions for completing the Pre-Health Program on-line Information Form, essay and pre-requisite research project prior to the required January meeting for students that want to enter the program
  • Explore The Road to Becoming a Doctor or Explore Health Careers, for careers outside of medicine
  • Identify summer paid/volunteer medically related opportunities
  • Join and participate in Pre-Health Society meetings and events for the spring semester
  • If you are interested in allied health careers, dentistry or veterinary medicine, you are welcome to join one or more of the Career Interest Groups including Allied Health (for Physician Assistant, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, etc.), the VET Group for pre-vet students or the DDS Group for pre-dental students
  • Successfully complete second semester required pre-health coursework and other degree requirements
  • Meet with the Center for Advising, Internships & Lifelong Career Development Pre-Health Professions Advisor to discuss experiential opportunities
  • Ensure that you have met with your Pre-Health Advisor during this academic year
  • Request course evaluations from first-year faculty members at the end of the semester

Summer 

  • Complete summer paid/volunteer medically related experience and record your hours
  • Attend summer school, if desired or necessary, following discussion with your Faculty Pre-Health Advisor
  • Reflect on your summer experiences to decide whether you want to remain on this career path
