HUB Renovation Project

In spring 2025, we started to renovate the Holland Union Building (HUB). The HUB renovation has been discussed for more than a decade and postponed repeatedly due to the large price tag. It is now time to make this bold investment in our future and in the student experience, as outlined in our strategic plan

A multi-year plan to address this critical project will allow us to make significant improvements while being fiscally responsible. This phased approach also means that the work will be done in small chunks, often during the summer and over breaks, to minimize disruptions to the student experience as much as possible.

Phase One (updated June 1, 2026)

  • improve the dining hall, including new serving stations, upgraded equipment and a modern aesthetic throughout (complete)
  • create an open floor plan for both the upper and lower levels, adding natural light to the dining hall and lobby, and create a new stairway to replace the spiral staircase (complete)
  • create welcoming student-gathering areas (complete; the new addition seating area and lower level conference room are open, and furniture has been added throughout the upper and lower lobbies)
  • transform both the Britton Plaza and College Street entrances, making them more inviting and accessible (complete)
  • modernize the restrooms (complete)
  • update the social halls (complete)
  • upgrade electrical systems and generators (summer 2026 through winter 2026)

Phase Two (beginning in summer 2026)

  • dining improvements covering food service equipment design, commercial kitchen equipment procurement, and servery and lounge renovations across three dining and common area venues—Union Station, The Underground and the main Dining Hall.
  • new roof covering the entire facility (summer 2026)
  • mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades building-wide, with primary focus on HVAC unit replacement and air distribution improvements across all occupancy zones
  • new full-building fire suppression (sprinkler) system installation and an upgrade to the existing fire alarm
  • other deferred maintenance improvements

This work will be phased over the next two to three years, with crews active in various parts of the building year-round.

The project architect is the New York City-based firm Architecture Research Office (ARO).
