For many students just going to college is a big step. For those students willing to travel all the way across the country the experiences, opportunities and options are many but none quite like Dickinson College. Come hear from a panel of young alumni and current Dickinson administrators about the changing landscape of admissions; what it’s like to attend a nationally ranked, liberal arts college in Central Pennsylvania; and how a Dickinson education transforms the way students see the world.

Panelists

Joyce Bylander, Vice President and Dean of Student Life (joining by Skype)

Joyce Bylander, who joined the Dickinson community in 1998, began her duties as vice president for student development in 2013 and became the vice president and dean of student life in 2014. In this role, she oversees Student Conduct, Department of Public Safety, Residence Life & Housing, Career Center, Women's & Gender Resource Center, LGBTQ Services, Student Leadership & Campus Engagement, Intramurals & Recreation, Popel Shaw Center for Race & Ethnicity, Wellness Center, Spirituality, Service & Social Justice, the Milton B. Asbell
Center for Jewish Life, and the Prevention, Education & Advocacy Center.

Chloe Cunningham ’14, Associate at Daniel Fine Art Services

Chloe Cunningham ’14, an Art History major, currently works in the hospitality art field. Chloe is putting her academic and extracurricular experiences at Dickinson to use. While at Dickinson, Chloe was involved with a wide range of activities from Kappa Alpha Theta and Synergy Dance Team to Trout Gallery Curator and Admissions Tour Guide. She also studied in Florence, Italy through a Dickinson global studies partner program. Chloe looks forward to sharing how her Dickinson experience shaped her as a person and professional.

Andrew A. Dietz ’15, West Coast Page at NBCUniversal, Inc.

As an International Business & Management major and active participant in a wide range of clubs and organizations from Admissions tour guide and Asian American Alliance to the Posse program and MANdatory, Andrew Dietz ‘15 learned a few important lessons. Dietz is excited to share how his Dickinson experience has shaped and inspired him.

Andrew G. Hill ’13, Administrative Coordinator at West Los Angeles College

Andrew Hill ’13 was an Africana Studies & American Studies double major at Dickinson. After graduation, he earned a Master's in Digital Social Media. He is passionate about providing tools and techniques for young people to engage in history and social justice. In this panel Andrew looks forward to giving prospective students and alumni a glimpse into his own Dickinson experience as a Posse scholar, a Social Justice House resident, an active participant in the clubs and organizations around campus, and the opportunities of Carlisle.

Jamie Lopez ’12, Associate Attorney, Valdez Law Firm

Jamie Lopez ’12 recently graduated from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles and passed the July 2015 California Bar Exam. She credits her intellectual confidence  to her study abroad experience, and was inspired to take the LSAT on her own. Jamie has interned as a law clerk for the Honorable Julia W. Brand of the United States Federal Bankruptcy Court, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office Gang Unit.  Jamie, who is the daughter of two Salvadoran immigrants, is using the privilege as an attorney to work with a private Immigration Law Firm in Los Angeles. Jamie is also a member of the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, the Mexican American Bar Associate, and the Young Lawyers Association.

Yazmin Monet Watkins ’09, Spoken Word Poet and Actor

Draft of bio: Yazmin Monet Watkins is an internationally touring bisexual spoken word poet and actor. Watkins first discovered spoken word poetry at Dickinson College as a vehicle to discuss and provoke critical dialogue about the issues that matter most to her and her community. She has had speaking engagements at over thirty colleges and universities around the country including Harvard, Howard University and UC Santa Cruz and she has opened for Angela Davis, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez and Les Nubians.

Phillip Moreno, Regional Director, West Coast Recruitment, Dickinson College Office of Admissions (Moderator)

Phillip Moreno is Dickinson’s regional director for west coast recruitment with more than a decade of college admissions experience. His position allows him to work with students from the Golden State looking for a transformative college experience in the ideal setting that is Carlisle, PA. Whether prospective students and their families are just starting the college search process or have been admitted, this is a great opportunity to ensure all of your questions are answered about what it means to be a Dickinsonian.

About the Venue

Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles opened early 2014 in the historic United Artists building in Downtown LA. Built in 1927 for the maverick film studio, this ornate, storied and vibrant Los Angeles gem stands as a monument to a group of seminal American artists pushing out on their own, and anchors the Broadway Theater District's modern renaissance.
