Dickinson College to Host Award-Winning Transgender Author and Journalist to Discuss Masculinity

Am I a Real Man?

Author and journalist Thomas Page McBee will discuss the concept of manhood in a lecture at Dickinson. The talk, “Am I a Real Man? Questioning Masculinity with a Beginner’s Mind,” will take place Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium.
McBee will examine what it means to be a man through his personal experiences, drawing from conversations with leaders in the fields of neuroscience, developmental psychology, history and sociology, as well as his background as a transgender man and journalist.
McBee is the author of Man Alive, which was named a best book of 2014 by NPR Books, BuzzFeed, Kirkus and Publisher's Weekly. His second book, Amateur: A True Story About What Makes a Man, follows McBee as he learns the sport of boxing. In the course of reporting for the book, he became the first transgender man to box in New York’s storied Madison Square Garden. McBee’s writing has also been published in The New York Times, Playboy, Glamour, Out and The Cut, among other publications.
The event is sponsored by The Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and a Civic Learning and Engagement Initiative Grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and it is co-sponsored by the Women’s & Gender Resource Center and the departments of philosophy and English. It is part of the Clarke Forum’s semester theme, Masculinities.
