Dickinson College Hosts Former U.S. Representatives for Discussion of Current Political Climate

Former U.S. representatives Don Manzullo, R-Ill., and Betsy Markey, D-Colo., will address the current political climate and reflect on their congressional experience in a panel discussion at Dickinson. The program, “Congress to Campus,” will take place Monday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium, 360 W. Louther St. The event is free and open to the public.

Manzullo served as the U.S. representative from the 16th congressional district of Illinois from 1993-2013. He is the former president and CEO of the Korea Economic Institute of America. As a representative, he served on the Small Business Committee, the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the Committee on Financial Services and authored 17 bills that were signed into law.

Markey served from 2009-2011 as the representative from Colorado’s 4th congressional district. She was the assistant secretary for intergovernmental affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as well as the regional administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration in Denver.

The event will be moderated by David O’Connell, assistant professor of political science at Dickinson. His research, which focuses primarily on the presidency and religion in politics, has been featured in Presidential Studies Quarterly, Politics and Religion, Political Science Quarterly and White House Studies. O’Connell is the author of “God Wills It: Presidents and the Political Use of Religion.” His expertise has appeared in media outlets including The Associated Press, CNBC, The Christian Science Monitor and The Hill.

This event is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by the department of political science, the Churchill Fund and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness & Inclusivity.
