Dickinson College Student Earns Prestigious Beinecke Scholarship

Beinecke Scholarship will help Kayleigh Rhatigan '19 take her love of English to the next level

Since 1971, the Beinecke Scholarship has been awarded to more than 628 college juniors from more than 110 different institutions to support further graduate studies. This rounds to about only a dozen students from across the country being honored each year.
This year, Dickinson’s Kayleigh Rhatigan ’19 has been chosen for the scholarship, which encourages students “to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study in the arts, humanities and social sciences.” And Rhatigan is up for it.
“I really love being an English major,” says Rhatigan. “I love analyzing literature. I think it’s so revealing about the world, and it’s so important to talk about literature and what it can teach us about our lives.”
Each scholar receives $4,000 before entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending. Before Rhatigan, only one other Dickinson student won a Beinecke, Mary Naydan ’15, who went on to pursue a Ph.D. in English at Princeton.
