Livia Ball '24 and Destiny McFalls '25 presented papers at the Central Pennsylvania Conference, "Imaging African and African-diaspora Futures", on March 25, 2023, at Franklin & Marshall College.
Livia is a dual major in Africana Studies and Political Science. Her paper, "Cash Bail in Dauphin County: a six month snapshot", was the product of summer internship with the Dauphin County Bail Fund and researched the question: how does cash bail impact Black people in Dauphin County, with advisor, Professor Say Burgin.
Destiny McFalls '25 presented her paper, "Reimaging Black Student Identity: The power of Black student advocacy at Dickinson in the 1960s and 1970s”, a continuation of her research as the first Africana Studies Archives & Special Collections Internship in 2022.
Destiny is continuing applying her research skills in the Central Pennsylvania Consortium archives during the summer of 2023.
Celeste Hopson ’24 worked with Professor Johnson on the first installation of Africana Studies’ Sankofa Series of student-curated exhibits, Black Students Organizing, April 1, 2023, celebrating the historical and contemporary legacies of organizations and movements led by students of African descent at Dickinson College from the era of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement to contemporary times. Through interactive, audio-visual, and written displays, participants learned the significant influence that Black students and their allies have had in shaping the social, educational, and racial climates of our campus and the Carlisle community. Co-sponsored by the Department of Africana Studies and the Popel Shaw Center for Race and Ethnicity.
Celeste is an Africana Studies major and English minor.
Helen Owen '24, the second Africana Studies Archives & Special Collections Internship awardee, presented her research, "Climate Control: The Small School Politics of Racial Incidents", on April 27, 2023.
