The Arts Award was endowed by gifts from members of the Board of Trustees in honor of William W. Edel, president of Dickinson from 1946 to 1959. In selecting recipients of the Arts Award, faculty members seek individuals who personify the distinctive characteristics we value in a Dickinson liberal-arts education. Donyale Werle exemplifies all of these qualities and more. Donyale’s indelible work is of the highest caliber that the field of theatrical design has to offer. Her scenic designs have been seen on Broadway, Off Broadway, regionally, and internationally. On top of her immense and impressive body of work and her fight for just creative practices, Donyale has been a leading advocate for sustainable design practices. Every design she has created for more than a decade takes sustainability into account, and this value is at the heart of her work. In 2008 Donyale co-founded the Broadway Green Alliance which is an industry-wide initiative that educates, motivates, and inspires the entire theatre community and its patrons to adopt environmentally friendlier practices. Through lectures and workshops, Donyale has been traveling the world trying to transform the way the theatre industry utilizes and disposes of raw materials. She educates on alternative, more environmentally conscious methods of model making as well as in sourcing of sustainable raw goods, the re-use of previously manufactured elements, and the transformation of salvaged material that can be incorporated into the world of design.
