"Labor, Sex, and Justice in Japan’s Adult Video Industry" by Dr. Akiko Takeyama
While many adult-video stars in Japan appear to have chosen their occupation willingly, the number of women seeking legal redress for forced labor in the adult-film industry has grown dramatically. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Japan, this presentation explores the tension between consent and coercion in the making of adult videos in Japan. How are women recruited to perform? What laws and institutions protect them? How do women maintain themselves as free agents in an industry that seeks to commodify them? With its focus on women in film, the presentation aims to shed light on the intersection of gender, labor, and sexuality in the age of the Internet.
