Weiss Prize Concert and Animation Screening

April 13, 2019

Awarded annually to students majoring in English (creative writing emphasis), theatre & dance, art & art history or music.

The Emil R. and Tamar Weiss Prize in the Creative Arts, established in 1986, is awarded annually to students majoring in English (creative writing emphasis), theatre & dance, art& art history or music.

This year's recipients are composer-pianist Sam Phelps and studio-artist Diane Lee. Phelps will present Great Awakening, an original oratorio in a contemporary style recounting the Biblical story of the raising of Lazarus. The performance will feature James Martin (baritone), Jennifer Blyth (piano) and Douglas Buchanan (conductor) as well as student singers and guest cellist Lavena Johanson. Lee will screen her Weiss Prize animation, rendered by hand in the digital environment and based on a narrative that explores the impact of time and place on its protagonists.
