The Common Book Reading Discussion will be on the first day of classes in Spring 2019
Dickinson students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to join us for a discussion of Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover. Participants will join small group discussions, facilitated by Dickinson faculty.
Born to survivalists in Idaho, Westover didn’t set foot in a classroom until she was seventeen, and never saw a doctor during her childhood. Lacking any formal education, Tara taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to college, where she learned for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her to Harvard and Cambridge. Only then would Tara wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
