The Cicadas Are Coming! Get to know Brood X

May 3, 2021

Periodical cicadas are one of the most intriguing insect groups, emerging in exceptional numbers every 13 or 17 years.

Why do they appear so infrequently? Where do they live the rest of the time? How and why do they make that sound? Join this webinar by Professor Maggie Douglas and learn more about this incredible six-legged phenomenon that is unique to eastern North America. Maggie Douglas is an assistant professor of environmental science at Dickinson. She studies the ecology of agricultural systems with an emphasis on the roles of insects and other invertebrates as friend and foe to food production. Her research is oriented to practical application through dialogue with farmers, beekeepers, conservation organizations and policymakers. Douglas received her M.S. in entomology and Ph.D. in entomology/international agriculture & development from Penn State University, and she holds a B.A. in biology from Oberlin College. This event will be hosted via Zoom. The link will be provided to registrants the morning of the event.
