Earth Issues Seminar: “Locked Out”? Analyzing the Climate Change Adaptation Deficit in Germany

April 15, 2021

Join the Environmental Studies Department for our Earth Issues Seminar Series.

ENST alum Julie King, M.A. at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany and Dickinson Class of 2012 will present her research titled "'Locked Out'? Analyzing the Climate Change Adaptation Deficit in Germany."

Description:

Immediate action is crucial in preparing for and adapting to climate change. Despite ample scientific knowledge and an array of potential solutions as well as increasingly extreme weather events, limited action prevails in some German states and policy sectors. Drawing on examples focusing on coastal risks and water resource management, I will explain how the concept of “lock-in” stabilizes incumbent policies and discourses, consequently maintaining “business as usual” and hindering efforts to adapt sustainably to climate change.
