Earth Issues Seminar: Climate demons, agricultural adaptation and environmental protection

October 2, 2020

Dr. Kemanian will discuss "Climate demons, agricultural adaptation and environmental protection.

The Environmental Studies Department's Earth Issues Seminar Series continues with Dr. Armen Kemanian, Associate Professor of Production Systems and Modeling with the Department of Plant Science at Penn State University.

Summary:

"Global climate change and production and socioeconomic conditions converge to produce distinct outputs worldwide: "excess" production and pollution in some regions, and environmental degradation and conflict in other regions. The trajectory of different regions are no longer independent, poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa can destabilize Europe and other parts of the world. While the system is complex and a seminar will not resolve it, agriculture, and in particular the cliche "sustainable agriculture" is the stratum over which both environmental integrity and social stability must stand.  I will discuss from plant physiology and soil biogeochemistry to mechanistic modeling and machine learning."
