Presented by Dr. Markeysha Davis, Assistant Professor of Literature and Africana Studies, University of Hartford.
Dr. Markeysha Davis, assistant professor of literature and Africana studies, University of Hartford, will discuss the long messaging of the black freedom movement that manifested Black Lives Matter through a series of poetic verse from 1919 to present. It is necessary to contextualize the messaging of black freedom and struggle through the arts as a record of continued resistance to state suppression and violence.
The poets she focuses on represent the Harlem Renaissance, Chicago Black Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement and the Hip Hop generation.
