Sophie Raynard will expose the sexist and racial stereotypes inherent to the Disney culture by contrasting its fairy-tale films with the original stories.
In this lecture, Sophie Raynard will expose the sexist and racist stereotypes inherent to the Disney culture by contrasting its fairy-tale films with the original stories that are much more complex in their representations of the sexes and society. Through a few case studies such as The Little Mermaid and Mulan, she will deconstruct Disney's archetypes and stereotypes and propose a more critical reading of these modified fairy-tale plots in order to sensitize her audience to their subversive socio-political messages.
