"Dr. Ruth" Westheimer - Poitras-Gleim Lecture speaker, Wednesday, February 12

February 12, 2020

Dickinson College’s Student Senate is excited to welcome this year’s speaker for the annual Poitras Gleim Lecture, Dr. Ruth Westheimer.

At the age of 52, Dr. Ruth became a household name when she became the first person to talk about sex on the radio, and later on television. Her life before becoming a TV personality was not uneventful. She was a child holocaust survivor, and served in the Haganah in Israel before studying psychology in France. She moved to America in 1956 and continued her education in a very interdisciplinary fashion. She received her Master’s degree in Sociology and later her Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) of the Interdisciplinary Study of the Family. From there she worked for Planned Parenthood, and this experience encouraged her to become a post-doctorate researcher on Human Sexuality at the New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center. She eventually became the well-known Dr. Ruth and worked to promote healthy relationships and share sex-positive messages on the radio and television. Dr. Ruth will speak about her journey from a war-torn Europe, to education in America, becoming a practicing therapist and later in her life a television personality and documentary film maker. She will focus on how education and life experiences impacted this journey. The lecture will be held on February 12, 2020, in Anita Tuvin Schlecter Auditorium and will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are free to the entire community, but are required for entrance to this program.
