Women Center’s Internship Positions 

The Dickinson College Women’s Center is a resource that builds gender education and equality into the life of the institution through space and community, resources and skills, and events and opportunities. 

The Women’s Center is offering four Fall 2011 Internships to provide opportunities in which students may advance their own education while gaining experience. Interns will develop knowledge and experience by researching and becoming involved with our programs, events, and services. Interns will be directly supervised by the Women’s Center Director and attend weekly supervisory meetings to develop and accomplish specific program goals.  Interns will receive thorough and on-site training for all responsibilities.

When you apply, you will be asked to identify which of these areas are your top priority:  Gender Education, Marketing and Communications, Programs and Events, and Community Outreach.  All interns will work in each of these areas as needed.

Responsibilities include: 

 Attending and participating actively in regular Women’s Center staff meetings,  student intern board meetings, and occasional retreat/leadership development opportunities.

  • Planning, coordinating, implementing and assisting with workshops, programs, and events sponsored by the Women’s Center.
  • Conducting research on topics related to programs, events, and workshops.
  • Assisting with public relations, marketing, and program evaluations.
  • Maintaining the Women’s Center’s resource room and Unicorn Bookshelf library; assisting with general administrative tasks.
  • Educating the campus community about Women’s Center services, resources, and programs through open lines of communication with campus partners, including faculty, staff and administrators, student residential staff, student organizations, and informal student constituencies.
  • Working in a cooperative office environment with the Office of Diversity Initiatives and the Conflict Resolution Resource Center.
  • Willingness and openness to work with a diverse population.
  • Acting as an advocate for women’s issues.

 Qualifications: 

  • Must be willing to learn about gender issues
  • Commitment to working a minimum of 8-10 hours a week
  • Computer experience
  • Good organization skills
  • Enjoys a fast-paced environment
  • A self‐starter with a strong desire to learn
  • Will receive on‐site training for all duties
  • Be available for evenings for special events
  • Willing to work as part of a team

Interns not only gain practical work experience but also build on their great work habits, fundamental skills, and communication skills.  An internship helps individuals to combine theory with practical work experience. It allows for a student to work under the supervision of practicing professional. These internships will help develop professional work habits; and provides an understanding of the non-profit and higher education cultures. This internship will provide a bridge between school and the professional world, allowing you to learn about work in leadership, higher education, and advocacy; to connect with campus and community organizations; and to develop your programming, networking, and marketing skills.
