Film Screening: Brother Outsider
Wednesday, January 30th 2013
6:00 PM
Location: Stern Great Room
Synopsis: During his 60-year career as an activist, organizer and "troublemaker," Bayard Rustin formulated many of the strategies that propelled the American civil rights movement. His passionate belief in Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence drew Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders to him in the 1940's and 50's; his practice of those beliefs drew the attention of the FBI and police. In 1963, Rustin brought his unique skills to the crowning glory of his civil rights career: his work organizing the March on Washington, the biggest protest America had ever seen. But his open homosexuality forced him to remain in the background, marking him again and again as a "brother outsider." Brother Outsider: the Life of Bayard Rustin combines rare archival footage — some of it never before broadcast in the U.S. — with provocative interviews to illuminate the life and work of a forgotten prophet of social change.

Gender Stereotypes in Academic Science Contexts
Corinne Moss-Racusin
Postdoctoral Associate, Yale University
Tuesday, April 2, 2013
Stern Center, Great Room, 7:00 p.m.
Despite persistent gender disparity, no experimental research has investigated whether subtle gender bias may be contributing to the underrepresentation of women within the academic science community. In this talk, Moss-Racusin will discuss research providing the first evidence of such bias against female students, and highlight implications for academic meritocracy, diversity, and gender parity across science fields.
Biography (provided by the speaker)
Corinne Moss-Racusin is a postdoctoral associate at Yale University in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and the Department of Psychology. Before coming to Yale, she earned her Ph.D. in social psychology from Rutgers University and also studied psychology as an undergraduate at New York University. Dr. Moss-Racusin’s research focuses on understanding and ameliorating inequality within institutions. She studies the ways in which gender and racial stereotypes shape people’s own behavior and their social judgments, and how these in turn impact broader institutional diversity.
The event is sponsored by The Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues.

Is It Okay To Ask My Question?: Faculty and Staff Luncheon
Lecture and Training by S. Bear Bergman
Wednesday, April 3rd 2013
Memorial Hall
12:00 – 1:30 PM – Lunch Provided – Register in CLIQ
Please arrive on time – the presentation is 90 minutes in length.
People who are out of the mainstream in some way - in terms of ethnicity, sexuality, body, identity, and so on - are often put into the position of being cast as Native Informants. Talk and learn about the delicate balancing act between wanting to be more educated and putting someone on the spot; about locating the boundaries between learning facts and interrogating truths, between curiosity and intrusion. We'll explore the role of power and privilege in these communications, and try to create greater understanding of how we move in and out of those places so we know when (and where, and how) it is okay to get our questions answered (and what to say when we don't have the energy to answer anymore today).
Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Gender
Community Lecture by S. Bear Bergman
Wednesday, April 3rd 2013
Stern Great Room – 7 PM
Just exactly what is a transsexual, anyway, and how do they get that way? How is transsexual different from transgender, exactly? And what is genderqueer, and why do the words keep changing, and none of these newspaper articles make sense, and can't you kids today just make up your damn minds!? An informational and personal lecture about hormones, surgeries, 'social gender', gatekeepers, identification (and its discontents), and all the nuts, bolts, mechanics, fears, hopes, and dreams before and beneath a gender change. Rated M for mythbusting.
Same-Sex Marriage & the Supreme Court: A Plaintiff’s Story
Kris Perry, Executive Director, First Five Years Fund
Monday, April 8th 2013
ATS – 7PM
Sponsored by the Clarke Forum and PAC
In May 2009, two California couples—Kris Perry and Sandy Stier of Berkeley, and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo of Burbank—filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging California’s Proposition 8 under the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Represented by distinguished attorneys Theodore B. Olson and David Boies, who famously faced-off in Bush v. Gore, the plaintiffs and their case, now known as Hollingsworth v. Perry, have forever changed America’s legal and political landscape surrounding marriage equality.
On March 26, 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral argument in Perry to review the judgment of the federal court of appeals that upheld the decision of the federal district court that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional. A decision from the Supreme Court, which is expected by June 2013, could result in marriage equality nationwide.
In this lecture, Kris Perry will discuss her personal experience as one of the plaintiffs in this landmark civil rights lawsuit. From testifying at trial and watching oral argument at the Supreme Court, to seeing her twin boys go through high school during the case, to being represented by the nation’s top lawyers, Perry will provide an intimate, first-hand account of the case that bears her name—and what she hopes the future holds for marriage equality in America.
The Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues sponsored and planned this event in partnership with the Student Senate Public Affairs Committee. It is also part of The Clarke Forum’s Leadership in an Age of Uncertainty Series.

Film Screening: “How to Survive a Plague”
Wednesday, April 10th 2013 – 6PM
Althouse 08
Faced with their own mortality an improbable group of young people, many of them HIV-positive young men, broke the mold as radical warriors taking on Washington and the medical establishment. Desserts will be served.
The Film details the story of two coalitions—ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group)—whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time. With unfettered access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and '90s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer smack in the middle of the controversial actions, the heated meetings, the heartbreaking failures, and the exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making.
Reviews:
“…The first documentary that I have seen that does justice to this story of a civil rights movement rising from the ashes of our dead.”
Andrew Sullivan, The Daily Beast
“Tells the story of these activists and the organisations they built... in compelling detail. Their fight was a Gandhian one—using the tactics of non-violent civil disobedience, the creativity of the gay community, and the effective but tough slog of grassroots participatory democracy.”
Chris Beyrer, The Lancet

Film Screening and Discussion: “God Loves Uganda”
Friday, April 12th 2013 – 4:00 PM
Stafford Lecture Hall
God Loves Uganda explores the role of the American evangelical movement in Uganda, where American missionaries have been credited with both creating schools and hospitals and promoting dangerous religious bigotry. The film follows evangelical leaders in America and Uganda along with politicians and missionaries as they attempt the radical task of eliminating “sexual sin” and converting Ugandans to fundamentalist Christianity.
As an American influenced bill to make homosexuality punishable by death wins widespread support, tension in Uganda mounts and an atmosphere of murderous hatred takes hold.
The film reveals the conflicting motives of faith and greed, ecstasy and egotism, among Ugandan ministers, American evangelical leaders and the foot soldiers of a theology that sees Uganda as a test case, ground zero in a battle not for millions, but billions of souls.
Sean Lyness '11, an assistant editor on the film, will be here to introduce it and to take questions afterward about the making of the film.
Sponsored by the Film Studies Program, the Department of Religion, the Office of Diversity Initiatives, and the Office of LGBTQ Services.

National Day of Silence
Friday, April 19th 2013
The National Day of Silence is a day of action in which students across the country vow to take a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools, colleges, and universities.
Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence at the University of Virginia in 1996, to the organizing efforts in over 8,000 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across the country in 2008, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach.
If you plan to participate in the day, please pick up a sticker from the Office of LGBTQ Services during lunch hours in the HUB during the week of April 15th or stop by Landis House.
