How does the hearing process work?
All allegations of academic and social conduct that is serious enough to alter a student's status, are handled through the formal resolution process. A notification letter is sent to the students outlining the specific allegations of violations. Students meet with a hearing panel which consists of a student, a faculty member, and an administrative chair, all of whom have been trained to respond to conduct violations. Social violations that are not likely to lead to serious sanctions are typically handled by an administrator serving as the sole hearing officer. For more details on the conduct process click here.
Will I be notified if my advisee is facing charges of academic or social misconduct?
We do not notify academic advisors regarding allegations or outcomes for social violations. If a student has been found responsible for an academic violation, the academic advisor will be notified upon the completion of the hearing process. In addition, we encourage students to contact their advisor as soon as they are notified of the impending conduct proceedings to seek assistance and perspective. Throughout the process we strive to foster student accountability and self-advocacy and ask for partnership in achieving that goal. As Academic Advisors, your interest in your students’ success is one that we share. As such, we may be able to share information as requested, but will not volunteer information. If I am unsure if a violation occurred, should I still submit an allegation of academic misconduct?
Please contact Leonard Brown, Dean of Students, if you’d like to discuss the process for bringing forward an allegation of academic misconduct. In addition, if you're uncertain as to whether a violation has occurred, a simple Google search of a few sentences will yield similar submissions. It is also important to know that bringing a case forward does not dictate the outcome. Students can be found not responsible in the system, and bringing a case forward can clarify any confusion.
Should I speak with the student directly or just submit the allegation to the Dean of Students Office?
We encourage transparency with the student, and you will likely interact with the student again in your class prior to the hearing. Please refer the student to the Dean of Students’ Office if he or she has questions regarding the process. We also realize there are times where speaking with the student directly is not possible. Please contact the Dean of Students’ Office and we can advise on ways to facilitate the communication process.
