About the Internship Notation Program (INP)

The Internship Notation Program is Dickinson's official way of recognizing an internship.  The program runs in the fall, spring, or summer terms.  While enrolled in the INP, students attend their internships and complete a corresponding reflective component.

After successfully completing the Internship Notation Program (INP) while interning, the internship site name will appear on the student's transcript as course number INTR 7xx.

Several academic disciplines allow or require the internship notation program to fulfill their majors' graduation requirements, including Policy Studies (Law & Policy and Policy Management), Environmental Studies, Women's & Gender Studies, and Archaeology (for those not doing excavation fieldwork), International Business & Management, and the Health Studies Certificate program.

The Internship Notation Program includes:

·         four reflective papers/assignments spread over the semester or summer
·         a brief online pre- and post-assessment
·         periodic timesheets

All components are submitted online through Gateway and the Career Center will support you throughout the experience.

Q. Where have Dickinson students interned
A.  Students have completed the INP at internship sites across the country and the world.  For information and ideas, you can read student intern profiles and blogs and view a list of past internship sites.

Back to FAQs

Q. Why should I register for the INP?
A. To grow personally and professionally, to receive official College recognition, and/or to fulfill a requirement.  The reflective component of the INP guides students in their professional development and career exploration so that they are more prepared for their next step (another internship, grad school, or a job).

Back to FAQs

Q. When should I register?.
A.  You should register BEFORE you start the internship.  Registration for the INP must occur at the beginning of the internship (usually at the beginning of the semester).  Then, while you complete the internship, you also do the reflective work.  There are deadlines in place for each semester and summer.

The program is set up so you do the internship and the reflections at the same time.  We cannot grant notations retroactively.  Check registration deadlines each semester.

Back to FAQs

Q.  How do I register?
A. Through the Student Forms tab in Gateway.  The INP registration form will be listed as one of the available forms on the left-hand menu.

You will know that the registration is submitted correctly and successfully because you will receive an automatically generated confirmation via email.

Q. After registering, what else is involved with the INP?
A. Throughout the internship, the Career Center guides you through the Program and reflective component.

You will complete four short reflective assignments that are progressive in nature.  The reflective assignments are focused on YOU; they are designed to help you think critically about your experience and allow you to better explain what you learned and how/why it was useful to you.  The reflections lead to better defined career and personal goals and help you to better articulate your experience to future employers and graduate/professional schools.

All assignments are submitted through Gateway (there are no required face-to-face meetings).

Back to FAQs

Q. Do I get a grade?
A. No.  There is no credit involved, so you will not get a grade.  The INTR 7xx notation will be placed on your transcript upon successful completion of the internship and reflective component.

If your department requires or accepts participation in the INP as part of a graduation requirement, the Career Center will send a full report to the department chair at the end of each term.

If you do not successfully complete the internship or the reflective component/requirements of the INP, you will not receive the notation.

Q. Can I get credit?
 A. The Internship Notation Program is the preferred method for registering your internship.  However, credit may available in a few circumstances:

Study Abroad: Some study abroad programs integrate internships with an Intercultural Seminar or independent study, while others allow for the Internship Notation Program.  If participating in a study abroad program (including The Washington Center or NYC-Baruch Program), check with a Center for Global Study and Engagement coordinator about internship options.

Independent study: Some majors allow students to complete an independent study in conjunction with an internship experience.  Students receive credit and a grade for the academic component of the independent study.  If you are interested in this option, contact Amity Fox at foxa@dickinson.edu .

Q. The internship site says I have to get credit for this internship. What do I do?
A. You can confidently tell the employer that you are able to register the internship with your college.  So… You should apply!  We work with the you and employer to ensure requirements are met and the required/necessary paperwork is completed.

Send an email to Amity Fox (foxa@dickinson.edu) with the following information:

·         Your name, email, phone number, major, and class year
 ·        Name of employer & full contact information (person's name, title, address, phone number, email address)
 ·        Status with internship (submitting application, interviewing, or offered position)
 ·        An overview of the internship (position description or a link to the internship, idea of start- & end-dates, hours)

What is the Research Experience Notation (REXP)?

The Research Experience Notation is different from the Internship Notation Program in that the principal activity and focus of the research experience is original investigation designed to create new knowledge in a recognized field of inquiry.

The Research Experience transcript notation is intended to provide formal documentation of non-credit scholarly scientific research experiences that take place during the summer under the supervision of a professional researcher at Dickinson or at another institution.  Examples include student-faculty research with a Dickinson faculty member (on campus or at a field site), or participation in a summer research project at another research organization (typically a college or university, private research foundation, etc.).

Upon successful completion of a research experience and corresponding departmental component (overseen by the department chair and supported by the Career Center), documentation is placed on the official transcript through the REXP 7xx course number.

Students register for the REXP notation through the Student Forms tab in Gateway.  For more information , please click here.

If you have questions about this designation, please contact Amity Fox (foxa@dickinson.edu ) in the Career Center.
