Internship Program & Resources - Dickinson Internship Grants

Dickinson students have the opportunity to apply for a grant to assist them in completing summer internships. With the rising cost of living and with internships often being unpaid, the college would like to assist when possible. While we would like to be able to assist everyone, not all who apply will be given a grant.

Career Center Grant - For students doing low-paid or unpaid internships during the summer.

Müller-Peterson-Hach Internship Fund - Supporting internships in human rights, environmental protection, and human services in German speaking countries. Preference is given to students with financial need.

Requirements of Grant Recipients

·         Students who receive an internship grant must register for and successfully complete the Internship Notation Program.  To receive the transcript notation, you will be required to participate in a mandatory orientation, an evaluation process and write four reflective papers throughout the summer. These reflections will help you think critically about your experience; you will be able to explain what you learned and why it was useful to you (which can help you make progress on your career goals). Information about the notation program can be found on the Career Center Website.

·         Grant recipients will be required to share their internship experience with the college community.  The method by which recipients choose to share their experience will be proposed by applicants. Applicants may be asked to modify their proposal. This project must be completed by October 26 (unless otherwise negotiated).

·         Grant recipients who do not successfully complete the Internship Notation Program or their post-internship project will be required to return grant money.

·         Grant recipients are responsible for informing the Career Center of any changes in status that occur during the internship (for example: promotion, termination of internship). The Career Center reserves the right to withdraw grant monies if the internship is terminated or if the student terminates the internship prior to the end of the experience.

·         Grants can only be applied to the internship for which the recipient has submitted his or her grant application.

·         Grant recipients must be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors and enrolled as a Dickinson students for the following fall semester.

NOTE: If you are doing an internship through The Washington Center or as part of an independent study, the requirement to register for the internship notation program does not apply to you. See below for more information.

Grant Parameters

·         Grant may be awarded for costs such as: commuting to and from your internship, housing, food, other costs associated directly with your internship.

·         Grants will be awarded based on the application materials, expected income and expenditures of the internship. Students may apply for up to $3,000. A grant in the full amount of request is not guaranteed.

·         For those students doing an internship as part of an independent study, the grant cannot be used to cover the cost of the independent study credit. Funding should be allocated to lodging expenses, commuting costs, food expenses, and other directly related internship expenditures.

·         Students will receive notification of their status within approximately two weeks of the published deadlines.

·         Grant payment will be made on or around June 1, 2012.

·         Grants cannot be awarded early.

Students Studying at The Washington Center or Doing an Independent Study

·         If you are doing a summer internship through The Washington Center or if you are doing an independent study, you should not register for the Internship Transcript Notation Program. The Washington Center participants will be registered for academic credit through Global Ed. Independent studies should be registered through your department.

·         If you are doing an internship through The Washington Center or an independent study, the Internship Grant may cover costs associated with your internship such as food, transportation, etc.  Housing and academic fees cannot be covered by the grant.
