On
December 14th, 1907 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, a
group of men who were not satisfied with the current fraternities
or campus organizations, established an organization that was
very similar to a fraternity. The organization was called The
Contemporary Club and the founder of the club was Earl Peters.
The Club became very popular on the Dickinson campus and
continuously expanded its membership. The club's headquarters
was established in January of 1909, when it took up residency
in the Seabold building. During the following year, the club
continued its expansion and established its methods of recognion.
These recognitions included: a grip, a whistle, a password,
and a pin design. The pin was diamond shaped with a pearl
porder, the center consisted of a torch bearing the letters
"C.C" and was supported by two hands, clasped in
friendship and brotherly love.
By 1912, the club had become one of the most prominent organizations
on campus. Members of the club included some of the most outstanding
people of the student body. The club truly possessed the finest
of the male population.
The Club grew to such a size, that a new residence was necessary
to accommodate all the club's members. The college leased
the first section of East College and the club moved in at
the beginning of 1913. In 1914, the C.C.'s first publication
was published, The Torch, a newsletter for active members
and alumni.
During the 1914-1915 school year, the club became even stronger
in membership, in both quality and quantity. The
members began to want some national recognition for their
efforts. It was decided to investigate the possibility of
membership in a strong national fraternity. In the spring
of 1915, it was UNANIMOUSLY decided to petition the Theta
Chi Fraternity.
In March of 1916, Theta Chi granted the C.C. a charter, thus
creating the Pi Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity at Dickinson
College. The Installation of the chapter began on Saturday
morning of April 1st, 1916. The installing officers present
from the Grand Chapter were: Brother George Catuna (Ex Arch),
Brother F. V. Hugo (Vice Ex Arch), and Brother F. W. Ladue
(Chaplain). They were assisted by these brothers from Kappa
Chapter: Brother Schewinger (1st Guard), Brother Walten (2nd
Guard), and Brother Dunham (Graphite).
The meeting was called together at 2:30 PM and the ceremonies
commenced after the opening prayer by Brother Hugo. The oaths
were administered and the chapter rosters were signed by each
new member. The Constitution of Theta Chi was read and the
Pi Chapter was duly established at 5:22 PM on April 1st, 1916.
There were twenty-four Active brothers and four Alumni brothers
inititated. The election of Chapter officers was held after,
and the meeting was closed at 10:28 PM. During the school
year of 1926-1927, the Pi Chapter purchased a home between
the present Admissions Office and the Sellers House. The value
of the home was $31,000. The Torch was continued as the Chapter
Publication. In August of 1964, Pi Chapter was moved to Quad
2 and the college purchased the old fraternity house.
