Opening Season for the Dickinson College Community Garden Starts March 7th! It is time to get your digging forks out of winter storage and early spring plants ready to plant. The garden gates open at 9am! If you have not yet filled out an application to lease a plot at the community garden for the 2009 season please click here for details. Come to the Going Green Talk on March 7th at the Dickinson College Community Garden to learn about PEAS. Our local Master Gardeners will talk about how to plant them, how many to plant, when to plant, and the differences between types of peas. Whether you and your family eat peas or not we are sure there'll be some learning and laughs. This educational program starts at 10am. Please dress for the weather!
Mark your calendar! Our 6th Annual Local Food Dinner will take place on Saturday, April 4th! This year’s event promises the same gastronomical food experience as year’s past and will feature the inspirational keynote Lyle Estill from Piedmont Biofuels. (www.lyleestill.com). Our 2009 dinner event will be a fundraiser for the regional buy fresh, buy local campaign (www.buylocalpa.org) and a $10 donation is requested. Indoor Farmers’ Market at Dickinson College! Come and experience the plentiful resources available to our community on Saturday, April 4th from 3pm to 6pm. Local farmers, artists, and community organizations will have information and products available for sale in the Holland Union Building (HUB) Social Hall (located at the corner of College and High Str on the Dickinson College campus).
The 2009 Farm Goals
- Expand vegetable production from 4 acres to 6 acres.
- Increase produce sales to Dickinson College Dining Services with a specific focus on tomatoes, mesclun mix, baby spinach, leaf lettuce, potatoes, and peppers to name a few!
- Increase campus awareness of the College Farm and its partnership with the College Dining Hall Increase CSA size from 25 to 60 members.
- Maintain and develop the student internship program and faculty research projects at the College Farm Begin preliminary work for establishing perennial fruit production on the Farm.
- Continue to support academic interests in the Farm through course support, field trips, extracurricular activities, etc.
- Continue programmatic relationship with the Cumberland County Juvenile Probation Office to raise produce for donation to Project SHARE.
- Develop relationships with local alternative schools for environmental education programs at the farm.
- Continue collaborative work with Project SHARE and increase weekly produce donations to the food bank.
- Pursue possible grant funding opportunities to increase the efficiency and visibility of the farm.
- Utilize space in newly constructed and grant-funded greenhouse to extend the growing season for produce sales to the College Dining Hall.
- Install solar shower space for educational and practical uses.
- Fine tune new grant-funded solar power irrigation system using the farm pond and water storage tanks.
