resident William G. Durden ’71 has discovered a historical connection between Dickinson College and current President-elect Barack Obama. In the list of names of those who personally helped fund Old West after it was destroyed by a fire, the name G. Duvall shows up under the category of donors from “the City of Washington.” It is listed near other donors including, at the time, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Marshall, President Thomas Jefferson, Vice President Aaron Burr and Secretary of State James Madison. When Durden, who said he was “curious in general about the new president,” started checking out some background information on Obama’s career, points of view and family history, it led him “to a description of G. Duvall.” In this instance, the G stood for Gabriel, Obama’s great-great-great-great-great grandfather, according to The Chicago Sun-Times.

On Monday evening at the Senior Class Dinner, President William G. Durden ’71 announced that world renowned actor and director Antonio Banderas would appear in Carlisle on December 5. Banderas, who received an honorary degree in fine arts from Dickinson in May 2000, is returning to campus along with award winning novelist and screen writer Antonio Soler for a screening of their most recent film, El Camino de los Ingleses, followed by a discussion.

On October 14, Manchester Orchestra released a new EP/DVD entitled Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind. The album features the documentary What's Left Behind, two original tracks, and three live songs. The EP continues the band's unique evolution through soft guitar riffs, jumpy keyboard chords, and hard rock-heavy tunes.

The cross country team is on their way to leaving a legacy here at Dickinson College. This past weekend both the men and women secured a place in the NCAA Division III championships in Indiana. Both teams set out last Saturday to race in the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships at Waynesburg College. The women placed second overall and the men placed third. These finishes are the best that the cross country teams have ever done in program history.
