LALC 200 Afro-Brazilian Culture
Cross-listed with PORT 380-01 and AFST 220-07. This course explores elements of Afro-Brazilian culture in multi-racial Brazil and how such elements impact and often define Brazilian society and culture as a whole. The contents are organized around topics that aim at showing the relationship between culture and politics and the intricate web woven in the interplay between Africa, Brazil and the world and the multifarious processes of hybridization.

Cross-listed with PORT 380-02 and FLST 310-02. This course is organized in two parts. We will start by discussing the notion of Realism in literature and film and then we will spend the greater part of the course analyzing Brazilian film and literature and how Realism is (re)shaped in a diverse set of works. As we analyze the multifaceted realism of Brazilian film and literature, we will have the opportunity to discuss issues of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class.
