Dickinson Sports

Athletics at Dickinson College have improved steadily in recent years, making the Red Devils increasingly competitive in the Centennial Conference (CC) as well as in regional and national competition.

During the fall season, the women’s cross-country team made its seventh appearance in the last nine years at the NCAA Division III National Championships. They matched the program’s highest finish at the national meet, placing sixth overall. In addition, the Red Devils captured a sixth straight CC Championship—the program’s eighth overall—and won a fourth Mideast Regional title.

In addition, the athletes excelled in the classroom. For several years, Dickinson has been selected as an NCAA Division III Cross Country Coaches Association (CCCA) All-Academic team. In order to qualify, a team must earn a minimum combined grade point average (GPA) of 3.10. In 2005, the Red Devils posted a remarkable 3.52 combined GPA.

Leading the pack for the better part of the last two seasons has been Emily Hulme ’06. A two-time cross-country All American, Hulme won back-to-back CC individual titles and the 2005 Mideast Regional title. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine All-District II Cross Country/Track & Field First-team for the 2004-05 academic year. Last fall Hulme was named Mideast Region Female Runner of the Year for the 2005 cross-country season.

Dickinson had six athletes named as individuals to the CCCA All-Academic team. In order to qualify as an individual, athletes must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and finish in the top 25 percent at the NCAA Regional competition. The women’s team placed five runners on the squad, which is a remarkable feat. Along with Hulme, Annie Scogin ’06, Laura Straw ’08, Layla Naficy ’08 and Darcy McDonald ’09 were named.

Hulme qualified for the All-Academic team as an individual in each of her four years. She also was a member of the CC Academic Honor Roll in 2003, 2004 and 2005 (first-year athletes are not eligible). Dickinson placed nine women on the Honor Roll in 2005. To be eligible, an athlete must have a minimum GPA of 3.4 and be a significant contributor to his or her team.

The men’s cross-country team also has been successful on the course and in the classroom. The Red Devil men again were named an NCAA Division III CCCA All-Academic team with a combined team cumulative GPA of 3.42. Evan Sparling ’08 earned individual All-Academic team honors in 2004 and 2005 and was named to the CC Academic Honor Roll in 2005. The Red Devil men placed six runners on the Honor Roll in 2005.

The fall sports teams all produced impressive combined GPAs last semester. Overall 34 student-athletes were named to the CC Academic Honor Roll for the fall semester. The women’s soccer team turned in a 3.3 GPA for the semester while advancing to the third round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. And women’s volleyball had four players with cumulative GPAs higher than 3.75 and three players above 3.85.
