Dickinson Sports

Winners’ Circle

Dickinson College athletic teams have enjoyed great success in the last year.

The dominance of the women’s cross country team continued as the Red Devils captured their fifth straight Centennial Conference (CC) Championship and advanced to the Division III National Championships for the sixth time in eight seasons.

The men’s team raced to a second-place showing at the CC meet, marking its sixth second-place appearance in the last eight seasons. The men also claimed their eighth consecutive Little Three title, while the women made it 11 in a row.

Last spring the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams made their first appearances in the CC playoffs.

The baseball team earned the No. 5 seed but fell to Ursinus 11-7, and the men’s lacrosse team tied a school record with nine wins and earned its first-ever bid to the CC playoffs as the No. 3 seed. The Red Devils battled evenly with Gettysburg, which was ranked fifth in the nation, before dropping a heartbreaking 12-11 decision.

In tennis, Chris Magel ’04 and Eric Schroeder ’07 were runners-up in doubles at the Conference tournament. The pair finished 14-3 overall and 7-3 in CC matches.

In the fall the field hockey and volleyball teams both advanced to their first CC tournaments. The field hockey team earned the No. 3 spot in the playoffs with an 8-2 record in the conference, including wins over nationally-ranked McDaniel and Gettysburg. Dickinson dropped a first-round decision to Franklin & Marshall, but had four players earn All-Conference honors.

The volleyball team placed three players on the All-Conference squad, finishing 15-12 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Middle-hitters Margie Hatch ’06 and Ashley Young ’07 led the way as Dickinson was the No. 5 seed in the CC playoffs.

The football team was eighth in the Conference, as they went 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the Conference. The Devils also regained possession of the Conestoga Wagon with a 17-14 win over Franklin & Marshall and kept the Little Brown Bucket out of the hands of Gettysburg (27-6) for the ninth straight season.

Early in the season, the men’s swim team was off to a 5-2 start and a 2-0 mark in the CC after winning the dual-meet title last season. The women were unbeaten on the year at 8-0 and 3-0 in the conference.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams also were in the hunt for playoff action. The women won a school record 10-straight games on the way to a 14-1 start. The men were 8-8 overall but still very much involved in the conference race.
