Red and White Makes Pink
The athletes and teams at Dickinson College have become increasingly active in the community. The men’s lacrosse team traded an opportunity to travel to England for a trip to Louisiana to assist those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The women’s soccer and lacrosse teams have raised money annually to fund Leukemia research, while others are involved in reading and mentoring
programs for children.
Dickinson’s men’s and women’s cross country teams helped to promote breast cancer awareness month at the 2006 Centennial Conference (CC) Championships. Both squads wore pink ribbons and other pink running gear for the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) “Paint Pennsylvania Pink” initiative.
The athletes also encouraged the other CC teams to join them in promoting this worthy cause. “Breast cancer strikes too many women,” said Leah Suhrstedt ’07, a co-captain of the women’s team. “We want to do our part in raising awareness and playing a role in finding a cure.”
Chris Dumbroski ’07, captain of the men’s team, adds, “Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate. Men, too, have battled this disease, so it’s important for everyone to get involved.”
According to the PBCC, 11,000 Pennsylvanians will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. While there is no cure, promising medical advances are happening every day, and hope for finding a cure is growing.
“We are pleased that Dickinson’s cross country teams are taking up the message of breast cancer awareness—and running with it!” said Pat Halpin-Murphy, president and founder of the PBCC. “It is our hope that their action will inspire others to help the PBCC ‘Paint Pennsylvania Pink’ and ultimately reach our goal of finding a cure now so our daughters and granddaughters won’t have to. We wish both the women’s and men’s teams the best of luck in the conference championships.”
The women raced to their seventh straight championship title, while the men placed third overall in the team standings.
The women’s volleyball team also got involved in the fight against breast cancer, joining forces with other CC teams to establish the “Digging for a Cure” fund-raising campaign in October.
