Fall 2006 In Focus Home

Parent to Parent

Dawn is a wonderful time of day. Even if you’re not a morning person, you have to admit there’s something refreshingly special about beginnings. That has never been more true for our sons and daughters and their experiences at Dickinson. Whether your child is a first-year or upper-level student, there are transformational plans, initiatives and actions starting this fall that will affect them and all who follow in their footsteps.

The dawn about to break over Carlisle is the public phase of Dickinson’s $150 million campaign. The October kickoff event in Philadelphia heralded several key goals. All the goals were designed to launch Dickinson into its fabulous future by garnering the kind of financial stability you’d expect from a first-class institution.

The campaign will endow faculty chairs to attract and retain the best of the best
to teach our children how to succeed in life after Dickinson. Funds will support scholarships to enable the school to draw and keep the kind of student body of which our children are members. Other money will sustain the Annual Fund.

The campaign also supports Dickinson’s plans for significant bricks and mortar: a new interdisciplinary science complex. This will make our children’s school the envy of its academic peers and provide these young men and women with the opportunity to study and research with the best tools available. In the words of President William G. Durden ’71, this structure is “the most ambitious and potentially ‘useful’ building project in our history.”

The seeds for this endeavor were planted by Dickinson’s founder, Benjamin Rush. This ambitious project propels our children’s school ever more deeply into this still-new century of achievement.

What can parents do to support these plans? We can give, and so we should. We can encourage others of like mind and vision to follow our lead. We can be the partners Dickinson needs to achieve the kind of success that marks our children’s and their successors’ future.

It’s an exciting new day dawning at Dickinson College, and it’s only the beginning.
