Trash on the Plaza
April 15, 2008

Students and other members of the campus community promoted recycling through an examination of 24 hours' worth of HUB trash. The trash pickers recovered 34 pounds of recyclables and 104 pounds of compostable materials from 196 pounds of trash (taken from only 4 of the 7 HUB trash barrels), which means 17 percent of the materials could have (should have) been recycled (down from 28 percent last year). This year marked the first time that compostables were weighed and they represented a disturbingly high 53 percent of all trash examined.
