Andy MacPhail ’76 was named president of baseball operations of the Baltimore Orioles on June 20.
By bringing MacPhail to Baltimore, Peter G. Angelos, Orioles owner, hopes to revitalize the Orioles’ track record. MacPhail will have veto power on important decisions over vice presidents Mike Flanagan and Jim Duquette, and hopes to help create an identity for the team he adored as a child.
MacPhail and Angelos also worked together in 2002 and 2006 on Major League Baseball’s labor negotiating team. At the time, MacPhail was president, chief executive officer and general manager of the Chicago Cubs, positions he held from 1994-2006.
Before his time in Chicago, MacPhail was general manager and executive vice president of the World Series-winning Minnesota Twins in 1987 and 1991. His achievements were honored in 1991 when he received both the Sporting News’ Executive of the Year award and the United Press International’s American League Executive of the Year award.
An American-studies major at Dickinson and winner of the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, MacPhail played baseball for the Red Devils.
The MacPhail Baseball Field is named in honor of Andy and his brothers, Allen MacPhail ’67 and Bruce MacPhail ’73. MacPhail’s nephew, Bryan MacPhail ’04, also played for the baseball team.
MacPhail and his wife, Lark, have two sons, William and Andrew.
