Brian Kamoie '93 has been promoted into the Senior Executive Service at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). He will serve in the position of deputy assistant secretary and director of the office of policy and strategic planning in the office of the assistant secretary for preparedness and response. In this role he leads a team of professionals in developing national policy and strategy for preparedness and response to bioterrorism and other public-health emergencies.
Prior to joining HHS, Kamoie was an associate professor of health policy and health services management and leadership at The George Washington University (GWU) School of Public Health and Health Services. He taught classes in public-health law, health-services law, and homeland security and public health policy, and he has published a number of articles on these topics. He continues his affiliation with GWU as associate professorial lecturer in public health law and policy.
As a Dickinson student, Kamoie was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society, the Society for Law and Justice, and the Student Senate, and chaired the 30th Annual Public Affairs Symposium (PAS). He received his master's and law degrees from GWU.
Kamoie is a member of Dickinson's board of trustees and recently completed a term as the president of the alumni council. He is married to Laura
Croghan
Kamoie '92, with whom he has two daughters, Cara and Julia. The Kamoie family lives in Annapolis, Md. , where Laura is a history professor at the U.S. Naval Academy.
National Journal, the weekly magazine of American government and politics, noted Kamoie's appointment in its June 2, 2007 issue. In the "People" section the magazine said, "How's this for a long title? Brian Kamoie has been appointed director of the office of policy and strategic planning within the office of the assistant secretary for preparedness and response, at the Health and Human Services Department." The item mentioned his degree from Dickinson.
As Brian noted in an e-mail, "if the worst thing the media says about me is that I have a long title, life is pretty good."
