Judy Burke is a highlight of her Dickinson College class of 1995. In addition to graduating with honors in Greek, Burke has been named managing editor at Highlights for Children, publisher of Highlights magazine, one of the top children's publications in the country.
Burke's duties include editorial management of the Highlights magazine group and operational management of HighlightsKids.com and the company's reader-mail division.
“I'm excited about this new opportunity, and I'm looking forward to working more closely with my colleagues in those areas,” Burke said.
Her colleagues are equally elated. “Judy's promotion recognizes her mastery of publishing procedures, her understanding of the Highlights philosophy and her commitment to helping kids grow to become their best selves,” said Christine French Clark, editor in chief. “In recent years, the company's magazine group has expanded, now publishing two magazines—Highlights and Highlights High Five—as well as its children's Web site HighlightsKids.com. I'm delighted to have Judy's talents available to help manage the myriad editorial tasks associated with all of these endeavors.”
After graduating from Dickinson, Burke joined the Highlights staff as an editorial intern. In 1996, she was promoted to editorial assistant, then assistant editor in 1997, associate editor in 2000 and senior editor in 2006. Prior to Burke's latest promotion, she gave credit to Dickinson for the education she received.
“In my job as editor, I work closely with language every day,” Burke said. “My background as a Greek major has prepared me well for this by teaching me discipline and attention to detail and by providing me with a solid understanding of language and sentence structure. I feel strongly that my years of studying classics at Dickinson have given me a great advantage in my field.”
A frequent speaker at writers' conferences and workshops nationwide, Burke also has edited fiction, sports articles, activities and the popular “Goofus and Gallant” feature. In addition, she played a key role in the development of HighlightsKids.com and edited a craft book, Look What You Can Make with Paper Bags, and three children's journals for Boyds Mills Press.
Founded in 1946, Highlights for Children has a circulation of more than two million, making it the largest paid, subscription-based circulation of any general-interest magazine for young readers.
