Dickinson College is prominently featured in the cover story “Making the Grade” of the July/August issue of Alpha, a leading trade magazine for institutional investors.

The article describes the dramatic shift in investment strategy from the sleepy days when college endowments were managed conservatively—with most assets held in stocks and bonds—to the present, where institutions of higher education are proactively holding alternative assets (e.g., hedge funds) and making use of newer capital-allocation models.

Alpha reports on several schools that are leading this trend. College Treasurer Annette Smith Parker '73 is quoted extensively, along with the chief investment officers of other colleges and universities such as Lehigh, Vanderbilt and Yale.

The piece also traces Dickinson’s successful history of endowment management over the last few years. Parker describes the college’s retaining of Investure, a Charlottesville, Va.-based investment-services firm that manages a $4.5 billion portfolio representing a consortium of school endowments, and outlines the substantial returns the college has consistently experienced as a result of its efforts.
