Missing Sports History

Marc Stern

Marc Stern '65 was featured on our web site in October when he was appointed to a prominent position in the world of international finance. Stern was in the news again recently, although in this case it was for something he didn't do.

As first reported in the Los Angeles Times on January 26, Stern may be the only person to have had tickets to the two highest-scoring individual performances in NBA history. He was also the only person to have missed both games.

According to the story, when Stern was a freshman at Dickinson in 1962 he had tickets to see Wilt Chamberlain and the Philadelphia Warriors play the New York Knicks in Hersheypark Arena. At that time the Warriors trained in Hershey and played a few regular season games at the arena.

Unfortunately, Stern had an exam scheduled for the following day and had to give his tickets away. The date was March 2, 1962, and most basketball fans can tell you that it was the night Chamberlain made NBA history by scoring 100 points.

Now Stern lives in Los Angeles and is a season ticket holder for the Lakers. On January 22, he missed the Lakers game against the Raptors because he had to attend a birthday party. That night Lakers star Kobe Bryant scored an amazing 81 points in their 122-104 victory.

Stern told the story of the missed opportunities at a business meeting, and someone passed it along to the Los Angeles Times. The story has been picked up by a number of newspapers around the country as well as by Sports Illustrated. "A lot of people claimed to have had tickets to that game in Hershey," Stern told the Times, "but I may be the only person who claims to have had them and not gone to the game."
