John Jones on Time 100 List

Time Cover

Time
magazine has released its annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world, and a Dickinson alumnus has a prominent place on the list.

John E. Jones III, Dickinson class of 1977, presided over the intelligent design case Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District. In his ruling, Judge Jones found that the board's actions represented an unconstitutional introduction of religion into the public schools.

Judge Jones was cited in the "Scientists & Thinkers" section of the Time 100 as "The Judge Who Ruled for Darwin." After noting his appointment by President Bush, the Time article said that "he now finds himself an unlikely hero for scientists, many of whom credit his decision with taking some steam out of the intelligent-design movement."

Following the release of the Dover decision, President William G. Durden characterized Judge Jones as "an individual who is a true Dickinsonian whose accomplishments embody the aspirations we have for all our graduates as they engage the world-engaging the fray with issues that matter nationally and internationally." Judge Jones will be the speaker at Dickinson's Commencement ceremony on May 21, 2006.

The 2006 Time 100 list honors artists, political leaders, scientists, social activists and business leaders, including former presidents Clinton and Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Senator John McCain, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, entertainers and activists Bono and George Clooney and Olympic skater Joey Cheek.
