| Chris Devries ’69 is presented with a knighthood in the order of Oranje-Nassau by Lord Mayor of Amsterdam Job Cohen. |
Capping a distinguished 30-year career at Citigroup, Chris Devries '69 was honored by the Dutch queen, Beatrix of Oranje-Nassau, with a knighthood. Devries was decorated with the royal honor on Dec. 13 in Amsterdam during his retirement reception that was attended by about 350 clients and friends.
Job Cohen, the lord mayor of Amsterdam, gave a speech outlining the reasons why Devries was selected to receive the prestigious and exclusive recognition.
Devries, who for the last decade was Citigroup's country corporate officer and global relationship bank market manager for the Netherlands, made significant contributions to Dutch society, noted the mayor. Devries enhanced Dutch-American relationships and helped people from diverse backgrounds.
In this context the mayor mentioned Devries' leadership role and initiation of several new programs as president of the American Chamber of Commerce, the Holland America Friendship Foundation and the Foreign Bankers Association. His stewardship of intercultural organizations such as Humanity in Action and the Foundation for Giving Back further contributed to Devries receiving the queen's decoration.
Devries plans an active retirement with more time spent with wife Eva, an artist; daughters Annabel and Vivian; and his father, who lives in the Philippines. He and Eva are enthusiastic visitors to red-wine vineyards and wish to spend more time doing so.
Future plans also include diversity projects in Holland, work with his flower farm in Indonesia and rice plantation in the Philippines, several commercial ventures in Turkey and Indonesia, and non-executive board-of-director appointments.
