Anne Reidell Smith '87 teaches Middle School Latin (6th, 7th, and 8th grade students) at The Shipley School, a private co-educational school on the Main Line (Bryn Mawr , PA . ), in the suburbs of Philadelphia . Anne has been teaching in the area for 18 years; she completed her graduate work at Villanova University, earning her master's degree in Classics.
Fondly remembering her passionate and engaging Latin professors at Dickinson, especially the late and much beloved Advisor, Prof. Mary Moser, the renowned and revered "Uncle Phil," Prof. Emeritus Philip Lockhart, and the caring, devoted, and inspiring Profs. Leon Fitts and Robert Sider, Anne is honored to be recognized as a Distinguished Teacher of a 2005 Presidential Scholar , by her former Middle School student at Shipley, Jeanmarie (Gigi) Combe, of Berwyn, PA , who will be attending Princeton University with an academic emphasis in both Economics and Classics .
Gigi nominated Anne Smith as her most challenging and inspirational teacher at Shipley .
"I owe my professional career and achievements to my excellent education at Dickinson and all my Professors whose inspiration and dedication to all things classical touched my heart. I will never forget my summers abroad studying in Rome, Etruria, Pompeii, and Sicily~ and now I enjoy leading groups of students to Italy with a colleague yearly; our Middle School students love the cultural experience, the hands-on curriculum learning, and they appreciate the Etruscan art and Roman archaeology, too. I would like to dedicate my award in remembrance of Prof. Mary Moser." - Anne
