Joseph Brenner's entry in the 1939 Microcosm |
Emeritus Trustee Joseph D. Brenner '39 died on Wednesday Aug. 17, 2005 at 88. An economics major at Dickinson, he went on to
earn an M.B.A. at Harvard in 1941 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He
was president, chairman of the board and CEO of AMP Inc., retiring after 35 years of service. He also served on the Dickinson College board of trustees from 1982-89.
Last year Harvard Business School compiled the
Great American Business Leaders
database in order "to identify and chronicle the lives of 20th century men and women whose business leadership shaped the ways that people live, work, and interact." Along with such well-known names as Bill Gates, Lee Iacocca and Sam Walton (and DIckinson alumnus Jack Stafford '59), the list included Joseph Brenner. His business leadership legacy was noted this way:
"Brenner led AMP's rapid growth as the world's largest electrical device manufacturer while generating exceptional financial returns. Every year during his tenure, AMP was ranked as one of the Top 50 companies in terms of market value growth and performance."
