Jonathan Emlet '03 is almost midway through his solo hike of the Appalachian Trail. Emlet is tackling the more than 2,000 miles of trail from Georgia to Maine in hopes of raising funds for the American Lung Association. The fundraising campaign, "Steps for Stanley " honors Emlet's father, who suffers from emphysema. The funds benefit research for emphysema and other chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
For his undertaking, Emlet has been awarded the Founder's Award from the Volunteer Center of the United Way of the Capital Region in Pennsylvania. He also will be featured in the American Lung Association annual report.
Emlet, a York County resident, expects to reach Pennsylvania by mid-June. When he arrives, the American Lung Association plans to organize "Walk with Jonathan Day" near Boiling Springs, Pa. There also will be a benefit luncheon at the Outback Steakhouse on Union Deposit Road in Harrisburg on June 21, with 100 percent of the ticket price going to the American Lung Association.
