New Digital Photography Project

Oprah's Web Site
Dickinson alumnus Rick Smolan '72 received acclaim last year for America 24/7, his latest photography project with David Elliot Cohen. Amateur and professional photographers took digital photos to create a portrait of the nation over the course of one week. USA Today observed that "America 24/7 is an ambitious effort to document in photos the way we live our lives."

The book received more attention when it was featured by Oprah Winfrey on her annual "Favorite Things" program last fall. Oprah took advantage of the project's Custom Cover innovation by displaying her own customized copy of America 24/7 featuring her dogs, Sophie and Solomon.

Oprah's cover selection planted the seeds for a new project. Smolan and Cohen are inviting pet lovers to submit digital photos of their cats and dogs for two new books: Dogs 24/7 and Cats 24/7.

The best of the submissions, along with photos taken by photojournalists across America, will be included in the books to be published in June 2005. People who don't get their pet's picture in the book can still put it on their copy using the Custom Cover option.

The new project was noted in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, September 16: "By the middle of next year, a new breed of pet books are likely to start popping up on America's coffee tables, full of photos sent in by dog and cat lovers—in many cases with the book owner's own pet on the cover. If so, credit photographer Rick Smolan, with an assist to Oprah Winfrey."

Dogs and Cats Photos can be submitted from September 20 to October 31, 2004.
